The list of contributors to theS peaker sC ommentary on theN ew Testament, selected by the Committee at the commencement of the work, has necessarily undergone a few changes, owing to the death or altered position of some among them. In this first volume the introduction to the threeS ynoptical GS spels has been written, as was originally contemplated, by the Archbishop of York. Dean Mansel, who had undertaken the commentary on the first two Gospels, died in July, 1871, but left complete notes on twenty-six chapters of St. Matthew. Those notes are printed without any alteration or addition, except a few references to works which have since been published, and the headings to the sections, which, in accordance with the general plan of the Commentary, have been inserted by theE ditor. The Editor is solely responsible for the notes on the last two chapters of St. Matthew, and on the whole of St. Mark sG ospel. The Bishop of St. David sprepared his commentary onS t. Luke some years ago, but owing to the pressure of episcopal duties was unable to prepare it for the press. The Editor has had to complete and revise this portion of the work, for which in its present state he is ultimately responsible. In the following volumes the only changes which have hitherto been made are the substitution of Professor Westctott for the lateD ean A lford, as commentator onS t. John sG ospel ;of theB ishop of Derry for the lateD ean Jeremie, and the present Bishop ofT ruro, who had undertaken the commentary on theE pistles to the Philippians, Colossians, Thessalonians, and Philemon ;and of Professor Lightfoot and the Rev. J. Rawson Lumby for theE ditor, to whom the commentary on theE pistles of St. Peter andS t.
