About the Book History derives from Greek historia, meaning "inquiry, knowledge acquired by investigation". It is the study of the past as described in written documents, with events occurring before written records being considered prehistory. World history is generally considered a teaching topic rather than a research topic. There are many history text books of varying quality, with some addressing the teaching of history or historiography, the process of undertaking research in history. Its earliest roots of science can be traced to Ancient Egypt, India and Mesopotamia in around 3500 to 3000 BC. Scientific fields may be divided into: natural sciences, which examine natural phenomena including biological lifeforms, and social sciences, which analyze human behavior and societies. Both are empirical sciences. Disciplines that may be termed interdisciplinary applied sciences include engineering and medicine. Mathematics, which is formally classified as a science, exhibits similarities and differences to empirical sciences.
