About the Book Books on Jewish history describe the history of the Jews, their religion and culture. Judaism as a religion first appears in Greek records (323 BC – 31 BC), religious literature relates the story of Israelites going back to c. 1500 BC. The first Jewish diaspora was due to the Assyrian conquest and continued on a bigger scale with the Babylonian conquest. Jews lived throughout the Roman Empire. In 638 CE the Arab Islamic Empire under Caliph Omar conquered Jerusalem. During the Middle Ages there was a Golden Age of Jewish culture in Spain that coincided with Muslim rule. In the 18th century Jews began to campaign for emancipation from restrictive laws, and integration into the wider European society, and began a movement for immigration back to Israel and the re-establishment of a Jewish national homeland. The Zionist movement was founded officially in 1897, while Jews in Europe and the United States gained success in the fields of science, culture and the economy, and produced a disproportionate number of Nobel Prize winners. The coming to power of Adolph Hitler in Germany in 1933 was a disaster for European Jewry, resulting in the systematic murder of 6 million Jews in the Holocaust (Shoah in Hebrew). From 1949 the State of Israel has accepted many Jews from around the world. Also in this Book Religious education refers to the teaching of a particular religion and its key characteristics, such as: beliefs, doctrines, rituals, customs, rites, and roles of the faithful. In Western and secular culture, religious education implies a type of education which is largely separate from the dominant secular curriculum, and is undertaken on a voluntary basis by believers. In societies that adhere to religious law, "religious education" is an inherent part of the core curriculum, which teaches doctrines that define social customs as laws, with violations of them being treated as crimes, or at least misdemeanors requiring punitive action.
