For Kendrick Bates and his older brother, Byron, growing up in the Pine Hill area of Dallas was a tough task. Surrounded by poverty and limited opportunities, basketball seemed to offer the only hope of something better, away from the squalor and hopelessness. Their mother, desperate to ensure that the two boys don’t follow the same path as their older brother Desmond, who was also a promising player but who had been sent to prison after falling foul of the law, worked hard to provide for her sons. But now, with Kendrick coming into High School as a freshman and Byron returning for his senior season with dreams of making it big in the NBA, there is much at stake and a whole lot to lose. The upcoming season was set to be one of most exciting yet, with hated rivals Dallas Technical High School posing a serious threat to the ambitions of all. And amid the turmoil of the court action, would the Pine Hill players rise to the challenge and overcome the obstacles, not just of their opponents, but of the life challenges their world presented.
