This story is a third-person narrative that tells the journey of Pastor Thomas Owen's missionary work in south-central Africa, especially in the Amasuka tribe. The novel began in the parish of Thomas Owen, the pastor of England, and then moved to central and southern Africa, where there is the Amasuka (fire men) tribe, and most of the novel's content also takes place here. Like many of his other works, this novel is inspired by Rider Haggard's experiences with South Africa and British colonialism.
