Books like people have various ways of getting into their places in the world. This book cojues and seeks its place by force of circumstances which could not well be resisted. The circumstances need not be enumerated. But the chief circumstance, or primary object was to give an historical and biographical sketch of the family in A merica. It may seem selfish to mention the amount of labor that has been necessary in the accumulation of so much data, and this seems the proper place to express how much the author is indebted toG eorge Smouse, Elmer S. Burket and John M. Smouse, members of the Committee on Data, and also the Rev. J. M. S. I senberg, B. D., for the facts, and in many instances the very language herein given.
