This collection does not attempt to be representative; it does not compete, for example, with Mr. Mumbys two volumes. My aim was merely to bring together enough good letters to fill the book, and then to stop although, as it happened, when the time came I rejected almost as many as I used. This places me in a strong position when as you must frequently do you throw up your hands and exclaim, Why has he left out This and That? Sometimes the fault will lie with the law of copyright; but probably quite as often it will be either because I had not read the letters by This and That, or because I did not care enough for them.
