In the Prologue to the Rule of the Third Order Regular of St. Francis we are informed that he having ordained for the men his first rule, called the rule of the Friars Minor, and his second rule for women, called of SC lare, hath also written the third rule, called of Penance, for retired persons remaining in the world, ecclesiastic and secular, married and unmarried, of both sexes, which rule was confirmed by Pope Nicholas IV. It appears that in process of time pious persons of this third Rule or Order banded themselves together in religious communities, and took the usual vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. Pope Innocent VIII in 1487 added the vow of enclosure, and Pope Leo Xapproved of the institute, granted it a rule founded on that of Nicholas IV, and declared the members to be true Religious. From a book called The Rule of Penance of the Seraphical FatherS1 Francis approved confirmed by Leo Xfor Religious Persons of the 3O rder of SF rancis By BA ngelus Francis Friar Minour The First part at Douayi644 it appears that (besides the Popes mentioned above) the Institute was approved by Sixtus IV, in 1480, in his Breve Ad Christi Vicarii: Clement VII, in 1526, in his Bull Ad ubcris fructus; and Pius V, in 1568, in his Bull Ea est officii nostri. The history of the Convent of Nuns of which this volume treats formally begins with the year 1621 ;but its first origin may be traced to 1619, when two widows, Lucy Davis, nee Sleford, and Petronilla Brown, nee Kemp, took the habit of the 3rd Order at Brussels, in the Church of the Franciscan Friars, with the intention of setting up an English Convent of the Franciscan 3rd Order. They were professed in 1620. They were joined by other ladies from England and a ho(Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)
