L'ouvrage est conforme au nouveau référentiel du BTS SN (ex BTS IRIS et BTS SE), entré en application à la rentrée 2014. Il met l'accent, autant que possible sur l'aspect physique qui a été renforcé dans le nouveau référentiel. Face au nombre considérable de bus, interfaces et réseaux industriels, le choix des sujets traités a été guidé par la popularité et la non-obsolescence. Une attention particulière a été prêtée aux dernières évolutions des standards. Ainsi, le traitement du bus I2C s'appuie sur la révision 6 de la spécification publiée en avril 2014 et le traitement du bus CAN inclut la variante CAN-FD spécifiée en 2015 par l'organisme CIA, CAN in Automation. Les bus ou interfaces classiques, comme I2C, RS232, RS485, RS422, etc. qui ne sont pas spécialement dédiés au domaine industriel, ont néanmoins été traités car ils sont incontournables et peu d'applications n'en contiennent pas au moins un. Des exercices corrigés sont proposés à la fin de chaque chapitre. Le livre fait suite au livre Réseaux informatiques, du même auteur, dans la même collection. Les deux ouvrages couvrent ainsi la totalité du programme réseaux de la licence de l'enseignement supérieur.
