The following pages are based on the notes of lectures recently given by the author to an evening class of young mechanical engineers on steam, steam engines, and boilers. The rapid progress made in engineering science during recent years, and the limited space at disposal, have necessitated the omission of descriptions of obsolete types of steam engines, and the substitution of other matters of more importance to the present generation of engineering students. Special prominence has been given to the principles involved in the economical use of steam, and it is hoped that the book may be found of value, not only to the student, but to the practical engineer whose time and opportunities for the study of principles are limited. Most of the diagrams have been prepared specially for this work. I am, however, indebted toM r. Geo. C. V. Holmes for the use of a few diagrams from his work on theS team Engine. W. R.
