Coffield offers an eye-opening, easy-to-read overview of the issues involving ocean plastic and chemical pollution as well as coverage of deadly fresh water pollution, and growing water scarcity. The prevalence of plastic bags and bottles along with the promise and disappointment of recycling is fully explored. It's not just the oceans that are filled with plastic refuse - it's our homes, towns, and cities, and increasingly our food supply and our own bodies. The chapters highlighting whales and the Southern Resident Pod of orcas are especially significant considering the constant threat to these remarkable mammals due to illegal whaling, ship strikes, toxins, and capture. The mission of the IWC (International Whaling Commission) is introduced as well as the issues the IWC must contend with. A brief coverage of the Rights of Nature movement is an added bonus to this book. Included in the book is a fairly comprehensive list of groups and organizations who are working toward ocean and cetacean preservation that readers can join. There's also a plethora of ideas presented that readers can adopt and do on their own. Coffield writes with sincerity and earnestness. Despite the seriousness of the topics, humor is not absent from the book as the author shares her own plan-of-action which has many pitfalls and setbacks. Of significance is that the net proceeds from the sale of this title have been earmarked for donation.
