He does a good work who does anything to help this ;indeed, it is the one Essential Service now to be rendered to education. And the plea, that this or that man has no time for culture, will vanish as soon as we desire culture so much, that we begin to examine seriously our present use of our time. It has often been said, and cannot be said too often :G ive to any man all the time that he now wastes, not only on his vices (when he has them), but on useless business, wearisome, or deteriorating amusement, trivial letter writing, random reading, and he will have plenty of time for culture. This quotation serves as a fitting text for our subject this evening. It is culture that I want to advocate, and as, on so great an authority, culture is reading1 ,you will understand why I urge reading so repeatedly. And I hope at the close of my remarks, you may feel that my ideal of reading has a purpose to guide it, and also that system is a necessity for it. The system need not be expounded, as the official papers of the National Home-R eading Union do this, but the purpose should be explained, even to the exclusion of other sides, because that which guides the reading is, to my thinking, something far deeper than mere culture. It is possible to have culture without conduct, but though possible, it is not desirable. Therefore, while reiterating that culture is indispensably necessary ,let me add emphatically that culture without conduct as its outcome is lamentable.
