No one set should be expected to include all of the various postcards produced and distributed as pertaining to the Rockaway peninsula. For some seven decades (1880-1940) Rockaway was, quite fortunately, considered to be a summer-vacation resort community thereby deserving more than its fair share of postal cards depicting scenes of major attractions offered in the hope of encouraging the widest possible population and variety of tourists to frequent the pristine Rockaway oceanfront. Although over 2,000 different "historical" postcards were originally retailed during the first fifty years of the 20th Century, fewer than half that number of unique scenes have survived into modern times.
