La seconda guerra mondiale concluse una lunga stagione di conflittualita politica, militare e sociale. Eppure al termine delle ostilita le esperienze, le culture, le pratiche della violenza furono lungi dal cessare in Italia come in molti paesi europei. Comportamenti dettati dall'inerzia e nuove aggressivita, vendette a lungo covate, aspettative deluse, rivendicazioni antiche e rinnovati antagonismi, nuovi focolai di guerra civile sfociarono in pratiche violente radicate durante il conflitto, ma riattivate nelle forme e nei contenuti dal contesto della guerra fredda e dalla difficile transizione verso la democrazia che segno il dopoguerra europeo.
