Farce composee de trois farces sans grand lien entre elles, le Chandelier (1582) offre un programme qui ne correspond pas au canon de la comedie du XVIe siecle. Celle-ci prevoit une intrigue plus ou moins compliquee et liee a un heureux denouement: retrouvailles d'etres chers ou aimes ou bien mariage des amoureux, une fois surmontees toutes les difficultes morales, sociales et economiques. La comedie de Bruno se conclut, en revanche, sur la deroute des trois dupes napolitaines: Bonifacio, Bartolomeo et Mamfurio. G. Bruno entend prendre pour cibles la litterature amoureuse petrarquiste, la fausse science alchimique et la tradition humaniste latine jugee trop formaliste. Il y a 403 ans exactement, l'heretique Giordano Bruno etait livre aux flammes par l'Inquisition romaine. Il devenait des lors l'une des plus celebres victimes de l'intolerance et l'un des symboles de la libre pensee face aux pouvoirs et aux dogmes. Bruno laisse une oeuvre considerable redigee en italien et en latin. Les Belles Lettres ont entrepris la publication d'une edition complete, critique et bilingue de Bruno. Pour peu qu'on le degage des interpretations reductrices et de quelques mythes persistants, G. Bruno interesse aujourd'hui tant la philosophie que la poetique, tant l'art dramatique que l'histoire des sciences.
