Ce texte est la version française d'un article qu'Émile Durkheim publia en italien en 1900: La sociologia e il suo domino scientifico in Rivista italiana di sociologia, 4, 1900, pp 127-148. Il constitue un texte de référence pour l'institutionnalisation de la sociologie comme champ scientifique à part entière. Extrait: Une science qui vient de naître n'a et ne peut avoir au début qu'un sentiment incertain et vague de la région de la réalité vers laquelle elle va se diriger, de son étendue et de ses limites; et elle ne peut s'en faire une image plus claire qu'au fur et à mesure qu'elle avance dans ses recherches. Il est d'autre part d'une extrême importance qu'elle acquière ainsi une conscience plus élevée de son objet, car la voie suivie par le savant est d'autant plus sûre qu'il procède méthodiquement, et lui-même est d'autant plus méthodique qu'il peut rendre compte plus exactement du terrain sur lequel il s'engage. Le moment est venu pour la sociologie de faire tous les efforts possibles pour réaliser ce progrès.
