Lang voordat Cleopatra over het land van de Nijl regeerde, waren er al machtige koninginnen in Egypte. Zij stonden aan de zijde van de farao bij al zijn activiteiten en blijken een soms verrassend onafhankelijke positie in te nemen. Dit boek beschrijft de vele facetten van het leven van de Egyptische koningin. Hoe was haar relatie met haar echtgenoot de farao, haar familie, de hofhouding en de harem? Welke politieke, religieuze en familiezaken hielden haar bezig? Wat kwam er kijken bij haar begrafenis en hoe was haar relatie tot de godinnen van Egypte? Dit boek concentreert zich op de bloeiperiode van het oude Egypte, het zogenoemde Nieuwe Rijk (ca. 1539-1077 v.Chr.). Belangrijke koninginnen in die tijd waren Ahmose Nefertari, Hatsjepsoet, Teje, Nefertiti en Nefertari. De auteurs zijn als egyptoloog werkzaam bij binnen- en buitenlandse wetenschappelijke instellingen, waaronder de Universiteit Leiden, het Museo Egizio (Turijn) en het Rijksmuseum van Oudheden. This richly illustrated book focusses on the New Kingdom (c. 1539-1077 BC). The authors are all Egyptologists working at various universities and institutes around the world. This book is part of an exhibition held by the Dutch National Museum of Antiquities (Leiden, the Netherlands) in co-operation with the Museo Egizio (Turin, Italy).
