This book represents the culmination of a multi-year project sponsored by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada designed to improve the training of university faculty in the study and teaching of antisemitism and other forms of prejudice and racism. In contrast to other volumes often found on course syllabi, this volume is informed by the insight that there is neither a single way to think about antisemitism, nor an unambiguous, universally accepted definition of the term itself. It is therefore deliberately organized around specific concepts instead of chronology or geography. It aims to promote conversations across disciplinary, geographic, and thematic lines, rather than to promote a theoretical framework that unifies the study of antisemitism within a single field or coherent narrative. Conceived as a pedagogical tool for instructors teaching undergraduate and graduate courses about antisemitism and cognate topics, it is also intended for researchers wishing to familiarize themselves with multidisciplinary, cutting-edge perspectives. The concepts explored in the volume were carefully chosen by the project’s international steering committee to reflect best current practices in teaching and research about antisemitism, as well as to suggest potential directions for future scholarship. Each chapter highlights the central problems, methodological or otherwise, that the study of its concept engenders. In each chapter, the author seeks not only to explain the relevance of a given concept for the study of antisemitism and to trace its history and major scholarly debates around it; they also proffer an original argument that advances a particular perspective within the field, point to avenues for further research, and exemplify one of the diverse methods of investigation that scholars might employ in analyzing and applying any concept. In addition, each chapter is cross-referenced with others in order to facilitate readers’ appreciation of the assorted links between the concepts. The volume’s versatility reflects the way that its editors understand, and hope others will come to view, the study of antisemitism: it does not constitute an independent field of teaching and research, but rather an intersectional one whose significance and scope have often been misunderstood because of its scholarly isolation. This book thus promises to resituate the study of antisemitism at the crossroads of various fields of academic interest.
