Although not a war novel, “Keeper of the Blue” occurs within the framework of the Spanish Civil war. The story is seen mainly through the eyes of middle-aged professor of literature turned Republican officer named Horace. Via flashbacks and inner musings, the narrative reveals Horace’s past which went towards making him the man he is at the novel’s start. The reader also gets to know members of his platoon, various villagers and evacuees. The novel is rich with good people making bad decisions out of fear, enemy soldiers momentarily ignoring politics for the sake of human kindness and doing what is right and fellow soldiers, who towards the end, see the chaos as a means to make money. The war time journey finds Horace becoming a version of himself that he had never imagined yet ultimately does not regret. From humanist to solider, the bachelor into a father and idealist into jaded veteran.
