Croesus, King of Lydia, was the richest man in the world at the time he lived (around 550 B.C.). His gold mines provided him with riches beyond measure. Lydians were the first to strike coins of gold, and Lydian gold coins, with the king’s face stamped on them, were highly valued all over the known world around the Mediterranean Sea. This libretto is roughly based on The Histories of Herodotus. However, its underlying message resonates with the current era in which the richest believe they are the mightiest and yet can lose all in worthless wars fired by greed and the illusion of invincibility.
