This is the THOMAS CHUBBE ancestral family history beginning in 1561. It is a compilation of documents, family stories and historical photographs, setting forth the amassed information for future generations. The people who came before them are never gone because “a story that lives is not forgotten” as it becomes something else: a memory of who we were and the hope of what we can become. Hopefully, other descendants will carry the torch forward. This book has been completed with the consistent support from Neyda Bettencourt, Tess Haydon, April Betts, and distant cousins woven through America. Several ancestors fought in the Civil War. Others supported the Underground Railroad to save despondent and ragged slaves fighting their way north from the southern part of this country to find freedom. We learned there was a town created by a Chubb, a cemetery devoted to mostly Chubb people and a young woman who grew into adulthood continuing the work that her parents began by saving, saving saving…slaves. There were doctors, architects, farmers, woodworkers, railroad workers and war heroes. One ancestor kept a detailed Civil War diary; a surgeon who told of the horrific time in his life. I will never forget the day I found Orville Chubb’s diary in the National Archives; Tess and I were danced around our houses, albeit 3,000 miles apart. This work links the Chubb families who arrived in America from England in 1636. We have 15 generations in these pages, but this book begins with generation seven and moves forward.
