Brede Becker is a disillusioned attorney who works in a prestigious law firm as a Junior Partner as he follows in his father's footsteps. However, his father's ambitions for him are not his own. Instead, Brede has always dreamed of living in the untamed west. A prime source of his frustration comes from within his own law firm as one of his clients is a wealthy man who is ruthlessly purchasing land and cattle in the west as he builds his empire. Along the way he meets a widow who lives in one of the towns in his jurisdiction. He comes to have deep and tender feelings towards her even though he knows his affections are not returned. He works hard to win her trust and to prove to her that he is different from the other rude men she has to deal with every day that have made her withdrawn and unwilling to trust any man.
