Birth And Nurse-Midwifery: Discover The State Of Maternity Care In The United States: Famous Midwives In History Of U.S

Midwives have helped women to deliver babies for centuries and they were present at most births until the early twentieth century. Today, about 7% of all births, both vaginal and C-section, in the U.S. are delivered by certified nurse-midwives. Nurse-midwifery developed in the U.S. throughout the twentieth century when the Frontier Medical Service was founded in 1925. This early practice used registered nurses that were trained in nurse-midwifery in England. Throughout the 1900s, nurse-midwives, or midwives with medical training, revived the practice of having a midwife present at birth. This new ethnography examines the state of maternity care in the United States through the lens of one midwifery service at a community hospital. The author bases this ethnography on her 2014 dissertation research. (Research included a year of observation and interviews.) It is a significant addition to the study of American childbirth and nurse-midwifery. The book describes recent developments in maternity care, what the author refers to as epiduralized birth, a way of birth that is antithetical to ecological birth. The book also describes care provided by a nurse-midwifery service, care that involves a “normality paradox” among midwives who must negotiate highly technicalized care that often runs contrary to their values.
