This brief account of the trade cycle is intended to be a statement in as simple a form as possible of the main causes which underlie the rhythmical variations in the activity of business. It is not the result of original research, but is based mainly on the views of a comparatively small group of economists whose interpretations of the very compH cated phenomena of cyclical fluctuations seem to me to be most acceptable. Most of the leading ideas have been drawn from the writings of Dr. Marshall, Professor Pigou, Mr. D. H. Robertson, and from the great work on Business Cycles by Professor W. C. Mitchell of California. The facts and the subsidiary argument have come from a wider range of sources, including the writings of Professor Mitchell and M.
