Biblical Scholars in Africa have depended for so long on theworks and interpretations of Western scholars. Interestinglyin the second half of the twentieth century, many Africanscholars have given their interpretations of the NewTestament. However, research on these interpretations hasnot been carried out on the works of these biblical scholarsfrom Africa. This study is aimed at determining thetheological importance of the literature of one of the pioneerAfrican biblical scholars, E.N. Chinwokwu (formerlyE.N.Onwu) to the study of New Testament in Africa and toexplore how his writings have provided the basis for anAfrican interpretation of the Christian religious heritage.Thestudy is a qualitative research. The sources of data includeprimary and secondary data. The method of data collection isby means of interview schedules and perusal of writtendocumentations. The methods of data analysis are thehistorical and form criticism; which is basically narrative,descriptive, and comparative in style. The study reveals thatChinwokwu wrote as a scholar and as a reservoir of Africanculture who endeavoured to propagate Christianity andcosmology of Africa with no traces of any historicalanimosity. It also reveals that a critical examination ofChinwokwu's philosophy of Christian higher educationclearly demonstrated that education has a heavy dose ofreligious and moral instruction which is aimed at preparingthe human soul for life after death as taught by Christianity.We also find that the fundamental concept of Chinwokwu'sworks interrogates issues concerning human welfare, humanrights, human sufferings, human development, social justiceand progress in Africa. He has made bold efforts to relateBiblical interpretation to these social problems, by making the Bible to speak to Africans in their own idiom and culture.He is therefore one of the few Biblical scholars in Africaconcerned with the contextualization of the Biblical message.Chinwokwu's thought as a surge of new optimism whichendeavours to raise humanity above the mudded feelings andimpulses of his daily humanity should, therefore, be seen asan imposing and coherent body of materials from whichinspiration can be garnered for the next crop and generation ofyoung African scholars of Biblical studies.
