Generally, it is believed that Chinese New Year pictures originated from Gate-God picture of Han dynasty, and the term "New Year picture" occurred during Qing dynasty. In the beginning, New Year pictures were only used to convey blessings. As time went by, this form of art has extended to reflect social and daily life of the new China after establishment in 1949.
