The duty assigned the Author by the family of General Anderson and by his comrades of Camp Dick A nderson, U. C. v., of preparing this Life of the heroic patriot and soldier, has proved to him one of intense personal gratification. He had had the privilege of some association with General A nderson, during his sojourn inC harleston, and thought he appreciated his worth and nobility, but after the study necessary for this work, he realizes that he had not the faintest conception of the grandeur of the man, or the vast importance his services had been to his Country. Markedly, at two critical periods, his skill as aG eneral, saved the Army of Northern Virginia from crushing disaster and several times he contributed essentially to its success. If this work will win for him the fame his glorious achievements so richly deserve it will have accomplished its object, and the Author be amply rewarded.
