About the Book Drawing refers to visual art where a person uses drawing implements to mark paper or some other two-dimensional medium. Implements used include graphite pencils, pen and ink, paint, wax colored pencils, crayons, inked brushes, charcoal, chalk, pastels, various erasers, markers, styluses, and metals (including silverpoint). A drawing implement leaves a visible mark on the medium, the most common being paper, although other materials include cardboard, plastic, leather, canvas, and board. Drawings may also be made on a blackboard or almost anything. Because of the wide availability of drawing implements, drawing has traditionally been one of the most common artistic activities. Drawing is often used in commercial illustration, animation, architecture, engineering and technical drawing. A quick freehand drawing is referred to as a sketch, and is often a precursor to a finished work, which may be a drawing, a painting, or a sculpture. An artist who produces technical drawings may be called a draftsman.
