Spanning the years from World War I to the recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, stories include: * The soldier who, after being severely wounded, is awarded the French Croix du Guerre for his bravery in the WWI Battle of Chateau-Thierry; * The co-pilot of the first American plane shot down in the attack on Pearl Harbor and his eyewitness account of the "Day of Infamy"; * A sailor whose faith helped him survive the second worst American naval tragedy of WWII and a harrowing three days fighting off hypothermia and sharks in the chilly waters off the coast of Okinawa; * A P-38 fighter pilot who completed 46 successful missions over WWII France and Germany, who is shot down near Cologne and endured months of captivity in an infamous Nazi stalag; * A sister who joined the Women's Army Corps and volunteered for hazardous duty in the South Pacific of WWII just to be near a beloved brother; * The residents of a small community who find themselves reeling over the news of the deaths, within a few short months, of two native sons killed in combat in Vietnam; * A family who relates their memories of the day they were informed of the death of a son killed by an IED attack in Ramadi, Iraq; * And many other stories of valor and sacrifice. These true stories are supplemented by dozens of photos from private family collections as well as scores of vintage, archival photographs. Written in an easy-to-read format and set within an historical narrative that is both informative and educational, these stories are sure to leave the reader touched and inspired.
