Oliver Twist: The parish boy´s progress

CHARLES ENS (1812-1870), born in Portsmouth, he was the son of a clerk in de Navy pay office. A period of intense misery affected him during the imprisonment of his father for debt in the Marshalsea and he himself worked in a blacking warehouse. Memories of this period inspired much of his fiction, particularly the atmosphere of “David Copperfield”. After that, he worked as an office boy, studied shorthand, and became reporter of debates in the Commons for the Morning Chronicle and other periodicals. His first literary success was “The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club”, when he was only 25 years old. In 1837, “Oliver Twist” began to appear in monthly numbers in Bentley´s Miscellany, a new periodical of which ens was the first editor. Oliver Twist is the name given to a child of unknown parentage born in a workhouse and brought up under cruel conditions. After experience of unhappy apprenticeship, he runs away, reaches London, and falls into the hands of a gang of thieves. Every effort is made to convert Oliver into a thief. ens captured the popular imagination as no other novelist had done and he was held in high critical esteem, admired by contemporaries as varied as Queen Victoria and Dostoevsky, but it was not until the XX century that he began to attract serious academic attention.
