Nous vivons une crise de l'idéal européen. Que faire face à ce rejet qui est le fond de commerce des démagogies, en France comme ailleurs ? Comment neutraliser les forces qui recourent à l'anachronisme historique, à la fausseté négationniste, à la polémique caricaturale pour mieux masquer d'obscurantistes idéologies ? Historiens d'Europe, historiens de l'Europe veut offrir une réponse. L'Europe souffre d'un déficit à la fois d'historicité et d'historicisation puisque l'aventure européenne proposée au grand public est réduite souvent à une aventure tronquée, éclatée. Il a été beaucoup écrit à propos de la construction européenne comme du passé de l'Europe envisagé sous l'angle d'une collection d'histoires nationales et de leurs temporalités conflictuelles. De l'Europe comme référent historique commun, il y a eu des approches, mais limitées à des séquences discontinues. Pourtant, depuis le début du XXe siècle, de très grands historiens britanniques, italiens, allemands, russes, français, belges, hollandais ont réfléchi sur l'Europe... Les uns ont promu un art nouveau d'écrire l'histoire en faisant de l'Europe l'instrument qui leur permettait de penser différemment. Les autres ont écrit une histoire qui voulait montrer que l'Europe était sur le long terme une substructure de l'imaginaire. Réactualiser par l'histoire la figure d'espérance et de liberté de l'esprit que porte l'Europe en elle dans sa longue durée, et que le savant travail d'historiens européens n'a cessé de valoriser, retrouver un désir d'être que la seconde partie du XXe siècle a fait progresser, tel est le projet de ce livre qui défend une conscience de soi et donc une conscience de ce que l'autre est soi. Il est aussi une invitation à ce que l'histoire se replace désormais dans les chemins parcourus au XXe siècle par de grands historiens qui s'appelaient Pirenne, Huizinga, Febvre, Le Goff ou Hobsbawm et qui appréhendaient l'Europe non pas comme un épiphénomène, mais comme le palier d'une anthropologie humaniste de l'universalité...
