Flying the lead plane on a bombing mission, Ralph Hallenbeck was shot down over Wiener Neustadt, Austria. He was badly burned and captured on May 29, 1944 and held prisoner at Stalag Luft III and Stalag Luft VII until his camp was liberated in April 1945 by General Patton. The love for a sweet blue-eyed girl kept him alive and his experience is a lesson for us all. "WWII happened a very long time ago. It was the war where boys faced evil and became men. Many men were never the same. I sure wasn't. People often asked me how I survived. I am no more special than anyone else. It truly is a miracle that I lived. Only one thing helped me get up and keep going. I truly believe it was the sweet face of a blue-eyed girl from my home town that kept me alive and me home."
