Der deutsch-amerikanische Museumskurator und Kunsthistoriker Bernard V. Bothmer (1912–1993) sah sich, aufgrund seiner Ablehnung des Nationalsozialismus, dazu gezwungen, sein Studium der Ägyptologie zu unterbrechen und verlor seine Anstellung an der Ägyptischen Abteilung der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin. Die Biographie verfolgt Bothmers Werdegang von seiner Geburt in Berlin-Charlottenburg und seiner Jugend als Mitglied des „Kreises“ um den Dichter Stefan George sowie als Hilfskraft am Museum, über seine Emigration in die Schweiz im Jahr 1939, seine Weiterreise nach Amerika 1941 und seine Dienstzeit in der US-Army bis zum August 1946, als er am Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, seine ägyptologische Laufbahn erneut aufnehmen konnte. Als Quellen für diese Arbeit wurden Familienkorrespondenzen, sowie Bothmers Taschenkalender herangezogen; hinzu treten Unterlagen aus Archiven in Boston, New York, Mailand und Basel, sowie aus Deutschland. Bothmers eigene Schilderung seiner Reise von Genf via Lissabon in die USA im Oktober 1941 wird als Anhang ediert.
