"On March 1, 2013 the Presidentordered a sequestration of $85.3 billionacross federal government accounts.Final appropriations enacted on March26, 2013 reduced this amount to $80.5billion. Under current law, asequestration of direct spending willoccur through fiscal year 2024 andanother sequestration of discretionaryappropriations could occur in any fiscalyear through 2021.GAO was asked to evaluate howagencies prepared for andimplemented sequestration in fiscalyear 2013. GAO’s March 2014 reportbroadly examined fiscal year 2013sequestration at 23 large federalagencies. This report examines ingreater depth: (1) the effects of fiscalyear 2013 sequestration on theoperations, performance, or services tothe public for selected componentswithin federal agencies; and (2) howthose selected components plannedfor and implemented the fiscal year2013 sequestration.GAO reviewed programs and activitiesoperated by four components offederal agencies: CBP, CMS, OESE,and PIH. GAO selected these casestudies based on factors such as theshare of total sequestered funds andlevel of direct services provided to thepublic. GAO also incorporated findingsfrom a November 2013 report thataddressed similar objectives for selectoperations at DOD.
